70s Music Artist
Letter To The President (Full Frame) This feature-length documentary showcases hip-hop's close-knit ties to America's social and political policies in the last thirty years. Even before hip-hop, black musical artists of the past have been at the forefront of civil rights and black power movements of the late '60s and '70s. See how those movements were destroyed by the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover, and witness rap's birth from those movements and its own progression from being music heard at weekend block parties to its lyrics being debated in the halls of Congress. "Letter To The President" delves deeply into President Ronald Reagan's policies that negatively affected minority communities and inspired pioneer rap artists such as Grandmaster Melle Mel and Run DMC to tell the whole world about it in song. Then in the "glamorous" '80s, as some people prospered and many minority communities suffered, artists such as Russell Simmons struggled to get laws overturned that targeted those minorities. -See hip-hop's societal contribution and boldness in making rebel music that has turned the spotlight on many controversial topics. -Explore issues such as 2 Live Crew's first amendment fight, the effect of Gansta Rap, police brutality, state and local police surveillance, rap music's detractors, "The O'Reilly Factor" and, most important, hip-hop's radical move to make it's mark in future and upcoming elections. -Interviews from an eclectic list of players: KRS-ONE, Common, Davey D.
New Art in the 60s and 70s: Redefining Reality By the end of the 1960s a revolution had taken place in the perception and practice of art in Europe and North America. This book, the first detailed account of developments centered around the conceptual art movement, highlights the main issues underlying visually disparate works dating from the second half of the 1960s to the end of the 1970s. These works questioned the accepted categories of painting and sculpture by embracing a wealth of alternative media and procedures. Traditional two- and three-dimensional representations were supplanted by a variety of linguistic and photographic means, as well as installations that brought into play the importance of presentation and site. Through close examination of individual works and artists, Anne Rorimer demonstrates the pervading desire to redefine the characteristics of what was once accepted as truly visual in order to dispel earlier assumptions and offer other criteria for seeing. Artists whose work is discussed in depth include Robert Ryman, Gerhard Richter, Joseph Kosuth, Lawrence Weiner, Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Gilbert & George, Sol LeWitt, Adrian Piper, Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, Marcel Broodthaers, Robert Smithson, Daniel Buren, and Michael Asher. Forerunners of the period such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Piero Manzoni, Joseph Beuys, Allan Kaprow, and Fluxus are also included.
